According to the Ancient Mayan culture, the symbol of the Turtle stands for the wise grandchildren of Grandmother Galaxy (Hunab Ku).
This is because they are inaugurated in the knowledge of the time for all the beings at Mother Earth. The Turtle carries the Wisdom of Time on its shield because it exists of 13 parts like the 13 Moons of the year. The ring contains 28 little parts, just as many days fit into a month.
The beginning of time was initiated with "Three Stones of Creation" by the deity Wak Chan-Ahaw, which literally means "Risen Master of the Sky." Wak Chan-Ahaw was the god of corn, oftentimes also referred to as Hun Huhnapu, father of the heroic twins. He was killed in the underworld. Yet, with the help of his sons, he was resurrected. This resurretion is always represented by him emerging out of a turtle shell.
